Classy Glass

Murano glass was first born on the Venetian island of Murano over eight hundred years ago. What was once an art form exclusive to royalty and hierarchy has long since evolved into a wide variety of art, jewelry, and decor collected throughout the world. The process used to create this unique art form is called lampworking. The glass, made from silica, becomes liquid at high temperatures allowing the skilled glassmaster to shape the material. Techniques employed by Murano glassmakers include filigree, incalmo, engraving, lattimo, ribbed glass, and submersion. Inclusion of materials such as aquamarine, gold, copper, cobalt, and ruby allow glassmakers to create an art piece rich in color and craft.
